The slave revolt was bloodily beaten

The slave revolt was brutally beaten. Tula knew for some time in the wilderness to hide, but eventually, after a substantial bounty on his head was put captured by a fellow slave and the mercy of his owner. This carried him to town where more slaves who had taken part in the rebellion were detained. Several dozen slaves were then sentenced to death. Some were after whipping at the mercy of their owners. Tula slave leader was cruelly punished. He was among more broken down and beheaded. His head was then put on a skewer, a deterrent to other slaves

Tula, one of the main leaders of the Curaçao slave revolt of 1795, was Tuesday declared a national hero of Curaçao.

The independence fighter was exactly 215 years after the slave revolt of 1795 began proclaimed national hero of Curaçao. Late eighteenth century, about fifty slaves on the plantation Kenepa revolted. They let their owners know not to want to work for him and freed some slaves who were previously punished and imprisoned.

The revolt was largely prepared by the

Tula slave. Who claimed to be in contact with the French General Rigaud previously the slaves of San Domingo had supported a rebellion. The slaves of Kenepa were angry at their owner: Caspar Lodewijk Uytrecht. According to them the slave-owner charged too high prices for their food and clothes. They left Kenepa plantation and were shortly afterwards joined by slaves from other plantations. The now armed slaves below some slaves were able to break open prisons

Who was Tula, the slave a slave rebellion started in 1795 in Curaçao, and what was his    life like?

On August 17, Curacao commemorates the revolt of the slaves in 1795. This revolt was lead by an independence fighter called Tula. Tula who was one of the slaves that was stationed in Curacao at that time. A monument was especially made to commemorate Tula. This monument is located on the south coast of Curacao between "Koredo" and "Holiday Beach Hotel". The revolt started at Plantage Knip van Caspar Lodewijk van Uytrecht at Band'abou in Curacao on the morning of August 17, 1795. Tula was able to convince 40-50 slaves to join him in his fight. He was able to free himself and the other slaves and escaped from the camp and went to Lagun, where he was able to free 22 more slaves. Tula had a partrner in revolution, his name was Bastian Karpata. He and his other slave followers waited for Tula at a sugar farm called Sint Kruis. At this point, Jan en Miguel Boelbaai, gave the escaped slaves rum mixed with powdered goat's horn to drink. This drink was called "awi huramentu" which means sworn water. Tula sent one of his followers, the French slave Louis Mercier back to Knip to free the other slaves. Mercier first attacked Sint Kruis and took commandant Van Der Grijp and 10 of his mulattoes prisoner. Mercier also attacked Knip and was able to free more slaves and to get more weapons. After achieving his goal, he went back to Tula by following all the damaged areas Tula had left behind after his attack on the other farms. During this time, the director Johannes de Veer was notified of what had happened and he ordered 67 men under the lead of Lieutenant R.G. Plegher to go to Boca San Michiel by boat from Willemstad, and from there, to go on foot to Portomari, where Tula and his followers was camping. When the Lieutenant arrived at the camp site they attacked but lost the fight. Johannes de Veer was notified of the result and decided to sent 60 well armed people lead by Captain Baron to try to defeat Tula. With this group the Priest Jacobus Schink also went. He spoke with Tula and tried to reach a solution to the problem as he did not want to see a war. At this point, Tula was aware that the French slaves also desired their freedom, and so he did not accept any offer as what they wanted, was freedom. After Schink returned to Baron's camp, he told him the demands of Tula. After hearing this, Baron rounded up more reinforcements and decided to attack. Baron gave an order to shoot any slave. Between 10-20 slaves were killed and the rest escaped. Tula did not gave up the war yet. The slaves were poisoning their enemies water and stealing their food, until Tula and Karpata were captured and betrayed by a slave called Caspar Lodewijk. At this point, the war was over. After Tula was captured, he was publicly tortured to death. Despite its tragic end, the revolt of August 17 is remembered as the start of a long and wearisome road to the emancipation of the people.

                                               Tula is the ultimate symbol

Tula is the ultimate symbol of slavery to become Curacao Tuesday and was thus named national hero. This initiative of the Fundashon Rehabilitashon Tula. Tula and several other leaders of the slave revoltof 1795 were also officially rehabilitated as"men and women of honor and good name."Former Prime Minister of Martina Thurs Fundashon Rehabilitashon Tula is very pleased with the fact that Tula was proclaimed as a national hero.Facing the Dag blad said Antillean include:

Asour national hero Tula now join illustrious international freedom fighters like Nelson Mandela ,MartinLutherKing  and Gandhi even.

The revoltof 1795 marks the beginning of the liberation of slaves in Curacao.Netherlands slavery was not  until 68 years later, on June 1, 1863, abolished

                                                                                              Tula felt

Tula felt that the slaves in Curaçao were entitled to their freedom, since slavery during the French Revolution had abolished in 1794. In the Netherlands during the revolt, the French now time has come and Tula was therefore that all slaves in Curacao had the right to throw away in shackles.

As the Dutch priest James Schinck Tula on one day and spoke to his slaves would Tula the priest, who argued that the slaves of the Netherlandish and not the French government had to obey, including the following have blessed
